A new study has revealed its results into the safest drivers in the country – And produced a profile of the least likely to be involved in a road accident.

According to the data, the safest drivers are female, around middle-age and drive a Honda. The data collected measured information such as heavy braking, speeding, cornering and harsh acceleration – And concluded that generally women are safer drivers than men.

Not only can driving help older people to have control over their lives, encourage them to continue being outgoing in their day-to-day life, it has now been shown that ceasing driving in later years can almost double the risk of symptoms of depression and results in a much faster rate of cognitive decline.

Significant changes are being proposed to the driving test, in the aim to prevent novice learner drivers from taking their tests too early – However opponents of the changes argue that this will cause unfair pressure on the test candidates on the day.

The changes involve the idea of requesting a deposit for the driving test, which is only returned to the candidate should they pass the test – But others are saying that the prospect of losing more money on their test will put extra pressure on them.

Other changes suggested include fixed appointment times, designed to reduce waiting times – But this has caused concerns that this will give unfair advantages to learners taking their tests on quieter days or times.

A learner driver in Fife had her driving test ended prematurely by her ex-boyfriends dangerous driving antics – After ending the relationship just the night before.

Eric McLean was in the midst of her driving test when her ex-boyfriend, with whom she has argued and broken up with the night before, began following her in his own car, and swerved towards her, narrowly avoiding a collision.

After further dangerous antics including tailgating and obstructing a hill-start, McLean’s ex-boyfriend Steven Drummond sped away at excessive speeds, resulting in the Police being called.

Many of us have seen the snow coming down over the last week or so, and the drivers amongst us have likely been unfortunate enough to have to de-ice our cars first thing in the mornings to get them ready for driving – Not a very enviable task!

However one motorist in Canada took a different approach when he went for a short drive in town – By continuing driving his car whilst it was almost completely covered in snow!

After carving a small space in the snow over the windscreen so he could see through, the 80-year old chose to drive his car with around a foot of snow covering the remainder of the vehicle. It was not until he was spotted by a police officer who pulled the driver over that the windscreen was finally cleared.

As drivers in the 21st century, almost all of us with be familiar with some sort of technology we use to help us on our driving journeys, whether it be a sat-nav, a tom-tom, or a mobile app to give us directions or traffic updates.

However tech giants Google have now developed their Android Google Maps app to such an extent that they believe it will be able to correctly predict the destination of your journey without you needing to enter any details – Or even before you set off.

The new Driving Mode will use data from your location history and previous Google searches to guess where you are heading to – For example, if you check in at the office for 9am every day, or if you have been Googling the opening hours of a nearby restaurant – It will use this information to predict this is where you’re headed to.

After finally seeing the snow last week, many of us have had to get used to the dangers of driving in cold and slippy conditions – With some of us getting used to it faster than others!

As picturesque as the white blanket might look, it is important to remember that this does pose a threat to motorists. All drivers are aware of the various hazards of being on the roads these days – Whether it is the perils of driving in snow and ice or other drivers travelling too fast in their own vehicles, being behind the wheel nowadays requires all drivers to be alert and on their guard.

Hundreds of learner drivers are involved in accidents whilst on their driving tests every year – According to new figures released recently.

Almost 100 driving examiners have reported sustaining injuries whilst monitoring a pupil on their test – However the majority of these found that they could not blame their pupil for the accident, with 241 out of the 405 reported bumps being caused by other drivers.

Of the incidents caused by learners, 120 were caused by incorrect steering and 26 were blamed on braking – However only 58 vehicles were reported to have sustained serious damage, compared to only 58 with minor damage, and just 9 with no damage at all after making contact with another vehicle.
