Joining The Motorway

Many experienced drivers offer words of wisdom to newbies behind the wheel, and one such nugget of information that comes to many drivers as a surprise is that motorway driving really isn’t that difficult – It is only the task of joining the motorway that raises a challenge.

When joining the motorway, your priority is safety – So make sure not to pull onto the faster road until you are 100% sure the cars coming towards you are sufficiently far away that you can pull on and attain enough speed to travel amongst the other motorway users without any issue. If needed, wait in the slip road until a large enough space appears for you to pull out.

Tyre Blowout – What To Do

There are a variety of problems that can happen when you are out driving, but by far one of the most terrifying is the infamous tyre blowout – This is known to cause panic in even the most experienced of drivers, but it can be handled if you know these simple steps.

Firstly just stay calm to avoid any panic or rushed decisions. Instead of braking, apply gentle pressure to the accelerator to maintain momentum, and identify a safe place to stop your car, bringing your car to a controlled stop without endangering yourself or other road users.

Once you have stopped in a safe place, try reading our guide on changing a tyre!

The Importance Of Minimum Distance

With the amount of traffic on the roads these days, driving inherently contains a lot of dangers. From bad driving by other motorists, to poor weather conditions rendering roads unsafe, it is best to always exercise maximum caution when behind the wheel.

One such danger is that of tailgater’s – The act of driving too close to the driver in front of you, to an extent that you are causing danger to either yourself or others. Not only does this limit the view of the driver to see ahead sufficiently to anticipate the road conditions, should the driver in front need to brake suddenly, it is unlikely the tailgater would have enough time to brake safely.

Summer Drowsy Driving

Summer is a great time to be out and about – The sun is shining, the rain has finally managed to hold back, and you’re out in your car with the roof or windows down – But summer also comes with some dangers when you’re behind the wheel.

The effects of the heat can make some people drowsy – Which is especially problematic when you’re driving. If you do feel yourself becoming tired when behind the wheel this summer, always make sure to take a rest as soon as possible, and only return to driving when you are sure you are fully awake enough to make it safely to your destination.

Country Road Driving

Driving presents a variety of challenges – From the rush-hour commute to the stress of actually driving for a job , driving is a skill not easily mastered by many.

Even when driving in more quiet places such as the countryside – In fact, the countryside can be quite dangerous if you are not ready for the challenge. The combination of high speeds and low visibility means problems can arise fast and without warning, so it is always best to be on your guard when driving in the country.

Angriest Time to Drive

Driving can be a great joy at times, giving you a sense of independence and freedom you just wouldn’t get unless you were behind a wheel. Of course however, it can also be a source of great frustration, causing even the most mild-mannered of motorists to turn red with road rage at times.

Researchers have carried out a study of the most extreme time for the volume of road rages to go up, and found that this seems to be on Fridays in August, at 6pm. Whilst this does sound bizarrely specific, it makes sense – With hot weather at it’s peak in August, combined with most drivers stuck in rush hour traffic on the way home for the weekend, it stands to reason that this might bug more people than any other time in the year.

Prepare for Summer Driving

Unfortunately one of the problems with living in Britain is that we seem to spend much more time talking about driving during winter conditions than we do summer conditions. However that means when summer does finally roll around, we’re fully ready for it – No matter how brief it may be.

In getting your car ready for summer driving, it is a bit like having a spring clean – Get rid of the rubbish that may have collected in your car throughout the winter months, and get your car serviced to ensure it is in top condition for your summer driving – You’ll be glad you prepared in advance when you’re cruising around in the hot weather and sunshine!

Master The Hill Start

Learning to drive presents a variety of challenges – From the first lesson you are tackling a wide range of new skills such as mastering the brakes and clutch, and eventually more complex tasks such as parallel parking – However one problem many of our students seem to face during their lessons is the hill start – So we’re here to help.

The main thing to remember is to remain in control of the car – So always start with your handbrake firmly on to prevent rolling back. Then put the car into gear and apply pressure to the accelerator pedal until you feel the biting point, then ease the handbrake off until you start to pull forwards. If at any time you start to roll backwards, simply apply the foot brake to stop the car from moving and attempt again.

Safety for Teen Drivers

Although learning to drive can be a tough process to go through, it all pays off once you manage to pass your driving test and can finally take to the roads as a fully qualified driver.

However as a teen driver, you may not know that you are actually most at risk of being in danger on the roads. Contrary to common belief, teen drivers are involved in more road traffic accidents than drivers of other ages not due to taking more risks behind the wheel, but simply because they are less experienced that motorists with a few more years under their seatbelts.
