What You’re Doing Wrong On The Driving Test

As a learner driver, your main goal will be to pass the driving test, preferably on your first attempt. Not only will this help to save you money by not needing to take extra driving lessons and a re-take of your test, but it will also help to put a proud smile on your face – Because you passed first time!

Unfortunately, not all of us will pass the test on the first, second, or even third attempt (Or more!) – But don’t worry, you’re not alone! It doesn’t mean that you’re a bad driver, it just means you may have done something wrong on the day. And in many cases we think we know what the problem is – You just need to relax more and be more confident behind the wheel!

A Good Instructor Can Make All The Difference

Are you planning to start learning to drive? Or perhaps you’re already part-way through your lessons, and feel like you’re spending valuable money on expensive driving lessons, and getting nowhere fast with them? If so, you may be wondering what the problem is – And in many cases, the problem is a driving instructor.

Whilst older family members and friends may be more comfortable to sit in your passenger seat than a stranger, it has been proven that having a qualified driving instructor coaching you through your lessons will be much more beneficial in the long run, and will – on average – Help you to pass your driving test faster!

The Importance of Regular Lessons

For a learner driver, there are so many things that can trip you up when going through the process of becoming a qualified driver. Whether you struggle to afford the cost of learning to drive, or if there’s a particular thing or two that you just can’t seem to master.

However one aspect of your driving lessons that you should make sure to stay on track of is to maintain regularity with your lessons. Just one lesson a week, with an absolute minimum of weeks off without a lesson will help you to stay on track and focused and prevent you from becoming rusty on the skills you’ve learnt.

Learning to Deal With Driving Test Failure

Like many things in life, learning to drive can be an uphill challenge for some. If you’re not struggling with making the right decisions when behind the wheel, then you might be battling to get your manoeuvres perfect in time for the driving test – Not an easy task for many!

Unfortunately many of us won’t pass our driving test on our first, second or even fifth attempts – But don’t let this dishearten you. Keep reminding yourself that each test is one more step in the right direction, and that it’s better to take several tests and fail than to be on the road before you’re ready – Putting yourself and others at risk.

Driving Conversations

There are a variety of distractions that you can face when behind the wheel. It might be road signs that aren’t clear, causing you to take your eyes off the road longer than usual, or perhaps a child or pet in the back seat of your car being a nuisance – But there are some distractions that may surprise you.

Holding a conversation when driving, whilst not as inherently dangerous as driving when under the influence or when extremely tired, should be approached with caution. Even if you’re not talking whilst on your phone, studies have shown that the distraction of talking when driving, though minimal is still very real – So if you’re a chatty driver, make sure not to become too distracted.

Driving Lesson Time Of Day

If you’re in the process of learning to drive, you may well be considering the several factors that contribute to a good driving lesson – These could range from how tired, hungry or thirsty you are, to the time of the day that you have your lesson.

A lot of our pupils don’t realise that the time of the day they drive will make all of the difference. Getting stuck in rush hour traffic won’t help you to push yourself to driving test pass standard – But it might help to get your clutch control techniques perfect!

Reading The Roads

When it comes to driving and the challenges that learning to master being behind the wheel presents, there are many tricks to learn. From how to perfect your clutch control techniques to how to how to become a “Smart Driver“, you are likely familiar with all the rhetoric.

One nugget of advice that we can’t stress the important of enough is how to master reading the road. Unfortunately this doesn’t men looking at a road sign and understanding the words, but how to observe what is happening one, two, or ten cars ahead of you, to anticipate what effect this might have on the road and traffic, and to make appropriate actions to deal with this.

Slippy Roads

As many of us might have expected, we saw the first snowfall of 2017 last week – Waking up towards the end of the week to a blanket of snow, ice and thick frost covering all that we could see. Although it didn’t last long, with most of the country thawing out within a day or so, it seems it made a lasting impression, with delays on public transport due to the weather conditions.

It also seems to have left our roads in a particularly slippy condition – So if you will be out driving over the next few days, exercise a little extra caution by driving slower and even more safely than you do at normal.
