Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to become an ADI

Before you start the process of getting a criminal record check, please read the DVSA’s guide to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

If you meet the DVSA’s requirement to start the qualifying process, you must first obtain a Criminal Record Bureau (DBS) Disclosure Number.

To do this phone TMG on 0845 251 5000 and complete the application form they send you and return to them ASAP.

After completing the form, post it to:

You will need the following information:

– The organistaion PIN:  ORG-37PYZBHM 

– Access Code: axisPDIPO

-Org name: DVSA – PDI (PO)

You will need your email address and be asked to create a password.

TMG will write to you enclosing a copy of your disclosure certificate and number.

Please note that this vetting service is free for all prospective trainee driving instructors.

Once you have received your Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) number you may now register as a PDI (Trainee Driving Instructor).

To apply by post complete your ADI 3 and return to the DVSA address listed below.

You only need to write the Disclosure Reference Number on the DSA form. You don’t need to send the disclosure certificate itself.

Or apply online. You will need:

– your driving licence number
– your Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate and date it was produced
– Details of any motoring or non-motoring offences, and disqualifications from driving or any court cases being brought against you.

The DVSA will write to confirm your registration and PRN.

This whole process can take about 4-5 weeks so we recommend starting your studies ASAP and complete Part 1 whilst this process is completed.

Once you have your DVSA PRN (personal reference number). You can book your Part 1 test.

If you do have points or a criminal record it does not mean you will be refused entry to the register. All cases will be judged on their own merit.
