£20,000’s of Parking Fines wiped

Hundreds of parking fines issued at a motoring pageant last week will be wiped and Enfield Council has apologised for the error.

The council stood to make £20,000 from the tickets after putting up several “no right turn” signs at the Donkey Lane exit of a playing field used for the Enfield Pageant of Motoring on May 24.

Many drivers claimed they did not see the signs, and several people said they would not return to the event in the future. However, officials did not put up the official sign approved by the Highways Code, meaning any fines issued would be worthless.

The right-turn debacle has now forced the council to backtrack.

A spokesman said: “The council unreservedly apologises to anyone who has been inconvenienced by this error and we are now taking steps to ensure this does not happen again.”

Temporary traffic order legislation allows councils to put up signs to direct traffic for public events, but strict guidelines state the signs must appear as they do in the Highway Code.
