More and more boroughs are using drastic punishments for anybody caught drink driving over the Christmas period. Drivers in Barrhead and Neilston will automatically lose their licence, be banned from driving for 12 months and get a criminal record if found to be driving over the limit. Some will even have their car confiscated.
Tough new measures need to be taken and the police will use all their powers to punish those that give a high reading or refuse to give a sample for analysis.
Chief Inspector Carle added: “We have to get the message across to people that they will be detected and brought before the courts if they take the risk by drink driving. As well as a fine and the chance of losing their licence such irresponsible drivers will have a criminal record and an offence which stays firmly on their licence for 11 years.”
Statistics show that more than one in seven deaths on Scottish roads involves a driver who is over the legal limit. Not only does this cost the economy millions each year but it devastates lives for the victim’s family and friends.
